Clif Bar & Company is recalling three of its bars due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination:
- CLIF Sierra Trail Mix energy bars; Best by dates range from June 5, 2016 to March 24, 2017
- CLIF Nuts & Seeds energy bars; Best by dates range from June 8, 2016 to January 21, 2017
- CLIF Mojo Mountain Mix trail mix bars; Best by dates range from June 16, 2016 to February 2, 2017.
The voluntary recall comes after Clif Bar’s supplier, SunOpta, distributed sunflower kernels that might have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The bars were sold across the country, although no illnesses associated with eating the bars have been reported to date.
Listeriosis is an infection caused by eating food infected with Listeria monocytogenes. It mainly affects pregnant women, the elderly, newborns/children, and adults who have weakened immune systems.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Listeriosis symptoms can include fever, confusion, headaches, convulsions and feeling off balance. Pregnant women can also experience fatigue and the infection could lead to a miscarriage or premature delivery. In some cases the infection could lead to death—particularly so with elderly individuals or people with severe medical issues.
The infection can be treated with antibiotics. People who are in the high-risk categories (i.e. those with weakened immune systems) should see their health care provider immediately if they believe they have eaten food contaminated with Listeria.
