Everyone is excited about the New Year’s Eve celebrations and might have already decided on the best bar to go to, which bands to watch, the New Year’s Eve food and drink menu, and so on.
New Year’s Eve and January 1 fall on a weekend, so the bars and restaurants are not allowed this year to apply for a temporary liquor license to serve alcohol through the night. We know this news might have dashed your excitement but there is some great news lying ahead.
Many restaurants which are open typically until 1:00 a.m. will stay open early into New Year’s Day. The bars in Chemung and Tompkins counties will be open until 3:00 a.m.
There is also another change to the laws that state that liquor cannot be sold on Sundays before noon. As New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, bars and restaurants can start selling liquor at 10:00 a.m. or 8:00 a.m., if they received a special permit.
