The Starz’s time-travel romantic drama will find Fraser and Randall married, and separated by a couple of centuries in season three. Outlander season three is expected to air sometime in 2017.

The two stars looked super fit at the Scottish BAFTAs. Fitness seems to be the key to their enviable looks. What are their fitness secrets? How did they work out for their roles in the popular series? Keep reading below to find out.

Outlander Actor Sam Heughan’s Fitness Journey

Heughan followed an intense workout regimen to get into his Highland warrior shape for the popular series. He says that before his Outlander role, he weighed 180 to 185 pounds. His workout routine includes running. He even participated in a running marathon on a charity team. The actor is a veteran at half and full marathons and loves to run. He said, “I was doing it more for the enjoyment of the experience, and I think that is the advice I would have. When you are running it, enjoy the whole experience and you will find that you will probably run faster.”

To get in super fit shape for his on-screen character, Fraser, he devoted six weeks in London with a trainer at a CrossFit gym. He focused on deadlifts, Olympic lifts, heavy weightlifting, and did a lot of conditioning work. The results were encouraging and he shared with Men’s Fitness, “Throughout the year I built up my way to 92-94 kgs (202-207 pounds) and really saw my lifts get a lot stronger.”

The actor trained nearly everyday and even setup a basic gym at the studio. This helped him in his sword fighting performances and says, “I just feel very agile and strong and I don’t feel I’m ever challenged, and I think that’s definitely down to the conditioning that we do and a lot of long hours.”

Heughan believes in keeping his diet clean. His diet would include sweet potatoes, peanut butter, and chicken, which helped him with the necessary nutrients for muscle growth. He also preferred eating protein bars while on location.

Caitriona Balfe Workout Routine and Diet Plan

Balfe maintains her enviable figure through yoga and Pilates. She also signs up for a boot camp when necessary, and includes hiking and surfing in her workouts. She feels a good amount of sleep helps her a lot and she admits, “sleep so often seems like a better option.”

The actress believes in eating healthly and indulging in everything in moderation. Her diet could include breakfast smoothies made of avocado and coconut with maca. She may include veggies, fish, and chicken in her meals.

The Outlander team has a lot to celebrate with the recent Scottish BAFTA being awarded to Balfe. The two stars have an encouraging fitness journey.
