The American Heart Association’s Circulation journal just released the results of a new study. It concluded that giving patients who are recovering from a heart attack omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil daily for six months may improve the heart’s functions. A reduction in scarring in the undamaged muscle was also reported. “The recovery period after a heart attack is a vital time,” says Adrian Newman, publisher of Doctors Health Press. “We’ve heard so much of what fish oil can do as a supplement, so it’s not surprising that aiding in heart attack recovery is another one of its benefits.”

After a heart attack, the heart can actually change shape and have its functions altered and currently, there aren’t many therapies that address this problem. This study consisted of 360 heart attack survivor, of which half were given four grams of omega-3 fatty acid daily for a six-month period and the rest were given a placebo.

All survivors remained under the close observation of a physician in case of any adverse effects. At the end of that six-month period, it was reported that those who received the fatty acid experienced improved cardiac remodelling.

“Doctors Health Press has previously commented on the overall health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids,” Newman continues. “Everything from their role in helping with depression to being part of a regiment that improves the quality of life in cancer patients. We now have another great benefit that will continue to improve lives.”
