Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to bulking up for a movie role, and his latest Marvel movie has him flexing bigger muscles than ever before. And he will need all his strength as his character, Thor, takes on Hulk in the highly anticipated Thor:Ragnarok, due to be released in November 2017.

Hemsworth has become the face of Thor to moviegoers as he has played the Marvel hero in all of the same-named films as well as in the Avengers movies. He has been featured in various box-office hits such as Star Trek, Rush, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Red Dawn.

Dedication to his Roles

To see a picture of Hemsworth, in fine form for the movie, you would never know he first began workouts when casted for the role in the first Thor movie, released in 2011. Up until that time, he played physical sports and surfed. In fact, his trainer at the time, Steve Walsh, ensured Hemsworth maintained his speed and agility. Walsh himself was a former professional rugby player.

When Hemsworth landed the role of such a powerful hero as Thor, he knew he had to step up his game and enlisted celebrity trainer, Duffy Gaver. A ex-Navy SEAL, Gaver has transformed some of Hollywood’s biggest actors into the amazing characters we love with his own workout routines. Aside from Hemsworth, Gaver has worked with Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson, and Channing Tatum, just to name a few.

Fans got a peek at his physique during filming in an Instagram photo released by Hemsworth himself. In the photo, he flexes his arms in a celebratory cheer for a win by his home country team, the Western Bulldogs, in the Australian Football League.

Building a Muscle Powerhouse

In order to prepare for his Thor roles, Hemsworth incorporated his regular boxing moves along with his passion for Muay Thai. These helped him to remain lean and agile for his fighting and action scenes. To build muscle mass, he followed a strict diet and workout regimen that gave him the body of a champion.

Adhering to Gaver’s workout routine, Hemsworth concentrated on different muscle groups on different days. Weight training sessions highlighted lifting weights, boxing, planks, crunches, and even surfing sessions.

Building muscle mass calls for consuming the right foods at the right time of day, including a concentration of protein. For this, Hemsworth had a diet of steak, egg whites, fish and chicken, along with protein supplements. He also had to increase his intake of fiber with spinach and broccoli and cutback on starches such as potatoes and white rice.

Hemsworth has used Gaver’s no-nonsense body-building workouts for his powerful roles over the past several years.
