National Sandwich Day 2016: Try These Four Easy and Healthy Sandwich Recipes

National Sandwich Day is November 3, so you know what’s for dinner: sandwiches. Most people love a good sandwich, so there shouldn’t be too many complaints from whatever hungry crew you’re feeding. All you need are a few sandwich recipes, and below are a few delicious sandwich ideas.

Four Easy Sandwich Recipes

For the Meat Lover

Meatballs are a timeless classic, and they go so well on a soft sub (or hoagie) bun. If you have leftover meatballs, great; otherwise, buy a pack of frozen meatballs and cook them according to the instructions. Cut open a sub bun and spoon some marina sauce to the bottom portion. Add enough meatballs to cover the length of the bun.

Top with more marinara sauce and then some mozzarella cheese. You can add the top piece of the bun and start eating, or toast it in the oven open faced until the cheese is golden. Either way, this sandwich is going to be tasty.

For the Fish Fiend

A good fish sandwich can be so very satisfying, and doesn’t require much know-how in the kitchen. You will need a good cut of white fish for this. It is best to buy fish from a fish market for the best quality. Also, have on hand some nice crusty buns, like ciabatta.

With the fish, coat the piece with flour on both sides and fry in a hot pan until golden brown. Use a combination of both oil and butter. The oil will prevent the butter from burning and we want the butter for flavor.

Cut open the bun; spread on it some homemade tartar sauce, which can be done easily by mixing some relish into mayonnaise. Layer on the fish, and add some shredded lettuce and avocado slices. The creaminess of the avocado goes very well with the buttery flavor of the fish.

For the Vegetarian

Vegetarians love a good sandwich as much as anyone else—they just don’t want the meat. An easy fix for veggie eaters is this loaded veggie wrap.

For this, you will need wraps, some store-bought hummus (or your own if you have some on hand), and alfalfa sprouts, along with some cucumber rounds and sliced olives (which can be omitted if you aren’t a fan; replace them with capers for the same effect).

Spread a good amount of hummus onto a wrap. Add the capers or olives, enough so you get a piece in every bite. Next, add a good handful of sprouts and flatten out. Place some cucumber rounds on top of this, and then season with salt and pepper to taste. For those who like spicy, add a few drops of a favorite hot sauce. Roll up and enjoy.

For Fussy Kids

Some kids are going to complain about almost everything put in front of them. If that’s the case with your child, try this easy sandwich idea that is packed with protein and vitamins—and don’t be surprised if they ask for it again.

Take two pieces of bread, preferably whole wheat of some kind. Slather on some fresh peanut butter. If you think your kids will eat it, opt for a natural crunchy peanut butter—it’s healthier!

Slice up a banana and add layers of it to the bread. Drizzle honey on top of the bananas. The surprise comes in the form of chocolate chips. Place a chocolate chip on each banana piece. Place the other piece of bread on top and then cut into fours.

Enjoy sampling from the four healthy sandwich ideas above and feel free to get creative and add your own spin. You can’t go wrong.
