If you’re paying attention to celebrity gossip, you may have seen a little something about Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder replacing Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson for the next Twilight movie. But the reality is that gossip is rarely true, so why worry about it when you can still watch both of them in the Vampire Diaries? And if it is true, what’s even up with that? Are there only allowed to be two Hollywood vampire stars at once? Churn rumors, churn.

Nina Dobrev Is Ripped

If you want to know how Nina Dobrev stays in such good shape, you’ve come to the right place. She’s a former competitive gymnast, which roughly translates into her being on some next-level fitness. Gymnasts are known for their proportioned, toned physiques and extraordinary athletic ability.

Although she’s not competing anymore, you can bet she’s still using many of the toning exercises and training principles she learned in her past. Coupled with the fact that she lives an active lifestyle full of endurance exercises like surfing and spinning, it’s little surprise she has such a stunning body.

Taking a Holistic Approach to Fitness

Aside from living an active life and being a former gymnast, Nina Dobrev has also worked with celebrity trainers Harley Pasternak and Steve Moyer. They use various training styles to maximize her results, incorporating TRX machines to create resistance, weight training, plyometrics and endurance exercises, which leads to toned, strong muscles and improved balance and co-ordination.  Dobrev also incorporates hot yoga into her lifestyle to encourage flexibility and enhance muscular recovery. Her workout and lifestyle not only aid her body and health, but also help her perform intense, action-packed roles.

What about Her Diet?

According to Moyer—who prepares Dobrev’s meals—she heats high protein and “correct carb,” which is a term I love. Carbs are so often painted as some sort of super evil villain when it comes to dieting, but if used properly, they enhance all your workout efforts. Moyer makes sure Dobrev eats plenty of green veggies and protein, while including various carbohydrate sources—and good ones like sweet potato, oats, whole grains and fruit—into her daily diet. The carb requirements are likely based on her requirements for that day’s activities, fitness goals, and how she feels.

Going low-carb or no-carb, for most people, is a poor decision. If you want to find exactly how many carbs you need to eat to fee good and reach your goals, talk to a nutritionist. Generally speaking, however, a diet with about 30-40% of daily calories coming from high quality carbs is sufficient, but those numbers can grow or shrink depending on your goals. In many cases, you’ll want to lower them as you move forward in a diet, but they should always be present in some capacity. And remember, if you want toned muscles, diet is key: It’s what allows that hard work to show through your skin.
