Several Voluntary Recalls Announced Today Due to Possible Health Risks

Recall Alert

Several voluntary recalls have been issued today for food products that may pose health risks to the public.

Two of the product lines may be contaminated with harmful bacteria that could cause illness or death, while the third product line may be contaminated with peanuts that could pose a serious risk to those with peanut allergies.
Voluntary recalls are issued by food companies and manufacturers for their own products. The recalls are announced and publicized through the FDA website.

Kellogg is recalling some products from their snacks and cookies line, including Mother’s Keebler, Kellogg’s Special K brownies, Famous Amos, and Murray.

The Kellogg products may contain peanut residue. While the possible levels are believed to be low, they could still cause illness or even death for those with severe peanut allergies.

So far, no adverse reactions have been reported. As well, the Kellogg products only pose a health risk to those with peanut allergies.

Honey Bunchie, LLC, is recalling some of their Honey Bunchies Gourmet Honey Bars. The snacks contain SunOpta sunflower kernels that may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

Creative Snacks Co. is also recalling its bulk and packaged products containing SunOpta sunflower seeds, due to the possible presence of listeria monocytogenes. Creative Snacks Co. is recalling products under labels including Plentiful Planet, Publisher’s Clearing House, and The Fresh Market.

So far, no illnesses from these possibly contaminated products have been reported. Both companies sell their food products nationwide.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious infections and in some instances, may even lead to death. The bacteria poses a particular threat to the young, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Listeria infections can cause a number of adverse effects. In healthy people, they can cause nausea, headache, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, as listeria can cause miscarriages stillbirths.

For more information on the affected products, the FDA website has more details on Honey Bunchie’s, Kellogg’s and Creative Snack Co.’s voluntary recalls.
